The greatest thing is her smile when I walk into a room, as if she’s meeting me for the first time, every time.

The greatest thing is her giggle.

The greatest thing is watching her grow week by week, becoming more independent.

The greatest thing is the pattern her soft, sweet hair forms as it covers the back of her neck.

The greatest thing is watching her take her little hand and pet her dogs in the strokes we taught her. And even when she grabs a little too much fur, a little too tightly, knowing it’s out of love.

The greatest thing is when she cries, knowing I can make her stop by pulling her in close.

The greatest thing is the wiggle of her toes under water as she splashes her hands in the bath.

The greatest thing is watching her stare intently at a toy in her hands, watching her tiny fingers wrap around it, realizing she’s touching it herself.

The greatest thing is how she grinds her three little teeth together.

The greatest thing is her squeal when she’s having a good time.

The greatest thing is the smell of her skin as I hold her cheek up to my face and breathe her in.

The greatest thing is the intensity of her dark brown eyes.

The greatest thing is the way she curls up into my arms when it’s time for her to fall asleep, as if nothing will soothe her as much as my embrace.

The greatest thing is her grumpy, frustrated, wrinkled face as she grips her bib and rips it off every time we sit down for a meal.

The greatest thing is watching her tired eyelids drop in complete comfort and the sound of her breath getting louder, her sweet little snores picking up speed.

The greatest thing is being able to hold this little human and knowing she’s alive, that she came from me.

The greatest thing is that I could create something so perfect, even when I feel imperfect myself.

She, in all of her being and all that she is, is the greatest thing.
